Our Friend Mike
Michael (Mike) Hall
APRIL 4, 1944 – JULY 6, 2018
Mike was the son of Edith and Orville Hall, born in Savannah, GA, while his father was stationed there with the army. After duty, Edith and Orville moved back home to Rockhouse, KY, where Mike was raised alongside his siblings and forged his love of history, sports, building, and his wife, Patty.
Mike grew up on Rockhouse mountain, where he played every sport offered and excelled in school. After graduating from high school, Mike went on to Morehead State, where he majored in Biology. After graduation, he returned to Rockhouse and became a teacher and a coach at his high school alma mater and met the love of his life, Patty Slone. After getting married, Mike and Patty relocated to Northern Virginia, where they had their daughters, Renee and Michelle, and quickly became regulars at the local high school and little league sporting events, cheering on the local kids and their daughters.
Mike is well known in the Northern Virginia area for his work in the construction and commercial real estate development community. Since arriving in the area in 1972, Mike has worked for Bush Construction Corporation, where he participated in building Shirley Duke apartments, Foxchase, The Plaza, Braddock Place, Ballston Place at Lexington Square, 2020 Lofts and many other community complexes. Throughout his career, he was most proud of his work at the Carpenter Shelter in Old Town Alexandria and the Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home in DC, as well as the many concession stands and dugouts he built at local high schools and little league fields, and the homes of his kids and wife.
Mike was a true servant leader to many in the community. He frequently supported the needs of many individuals and charitable organizations in the Alexandria area, his hometown of Letcher County, and numerous local youth sports organizations. Some of Mike’s favorite charities to assist were those noted below, in his honor, the Mike Hall Foundation will continue his work to support these organizations, while also providing scholarships to student athletes pursuing a post-secondary education.
The Mount Vernon Athletics Booster Club supports sports teams at Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, VA; such as Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Golf. Mike was a committed supporter of the Majors and spent countless hours at the school watching his grandsons Christopher and Jake play baseball and family friends play softball. He looked forward to the day that he could watch his granddaughters Ella and Sarah play on the softball fields as well. At the annual holiday basketball tournament, he was a steadfast spectator in the stands for over 30 years. He was well known around the school for running the concession stand on game days (with his special seasoning), donating time, material and expertise to build dugouts. He was a familiar face around the diamonds standing at the fence behind home plate or in the bleachers at a basketball game, his presence at the games will be greatly missed.
Woodlawn Little League supports local youth baseball and softball in the Alexandria, VA area. Ella and Sarah currently play softball for Woodlawn Little League, and Dave, Mike’s son in law coaches. Christopher and Jake, played with Woodlawn from the ages of 4-16. Mike’s daughter Renee and son in law Will both served on the board. Mike, with the help of many of his vendors, helped build a concession stand and dugouts at Woodlawn’s field, and was a frequent sponsor of a spring team.
